SPIRITUAL JOURNEY

September 11, 2026 · 8 min read · 5 views

When I was very young, I can’t say how young, my mother would often tell me “Close your eyes”.  “Fold your hands and repeat the prayer after me”.  I would obediently follow her instructions.  I was not aware of the benefits of praying god; I still followed her.

Spiritual Journey and God

MY SPIRITUAL JOURNEY – A long Path

At times she would tell me “Don’t make mistakes, the Almighty is observing you”. I was so innocent at that time. As I grew little older, I would accompany my mother to temple.   I would do everything my mother asked me to do without asking her any question. I knew nothing about God. I did everything to please her.

Till the day I was under the protection of my mother and father, I never experienced pain or sorrow, I lived a happy and care-free life.  My mother was my God and I was confident that she was always there to protect me.

One thing which is certain in life is “change”.  Whether we are prepared to accept the change or not, circumstances keep changing from time to time. Both time and changing circumstances are beyond the control of human beings. I realised this when I moved out of my parents’ home.

A new world with great surprises and responsibilities was waiting for me.  Now, I had the responsibility of my own new family, my husband and kids.  I had to take care of food, clothing and education of my kids.   I was the team leader of my family. I took care of everyone’s needs and no one was there to take care of me.  At my work place I was answerable to my boss.  I felt as though I was drowning in a sea of responsibilities and no one was there to rescue me.

In the journey of our life, we come across various people, some give us pain and some pleasure. Some others pretend to be our well-wishers.

With increasing responsibilities, expectations from family members also increase, and when the expectations are not met, we have two options before us, either we fight or move away from people and maintain silence. When a stranger hurt our feelings, we can ignore them or avoid them. On the other hand, when our family members or someone close to us, give us pain, it is very difficult to accept it.

In life we experience two types of problems.  One is created by God in accordance with our past karmas or deeds and the other by man out of jealousy and greed.

Man is the most cunning and selfish being created by God.  He credits himself for his success and blame God for his failure. During the successful phase of his life, he does not hesitate to question the existence of God. Ironically during the most difficult phase of his life, when all possible sources of support seem exhausted and when he feels he is in a vulnerable and in hopeless situation, he turns desperately towards the same God for help.

There were times when I would say oh! God, please solve my problems, I will offer one Kg sweet as offering to you.  Slowly I realised that God is self-sufficient and does not expect anything from us.  He is a giver, the only thing he expects from us is pure devotion and good behaviour.

Gradually I realised that I was alone in the journey of my life, as I detached myself emotionally from people surrounding me, I was moving closer to God. I began to explore the supreme, invisible power known as God. I wanted to know everything about him.  For the first time I had various questions in my mind like, who is God? Where does he live? Will he really solve all our problems? And many more.

Who is God?

With time I realised that

As I moved closer to God, I realised that he is my friend, mother, father, brother, sister and my child. He meant everything to me. I started communicating with him, and it was a one-way communication.  I would share all my problems with him and was unaware whether he was listening to my problems or not. A great advantage of communicating with God is he never speaks to us directly and there is no scope for disputes. God speaks to us through action and action speaks louder than voice.

As we begin to feel that everything in life is proper and going as per our plans and life is on track, suddenly we realise that it is off track and we approach God for solving our problems. We keep waiting for him to solve our problems.  In reality God does not come down to earth to solve our problems, he will give us knowledge, strength and courage to solve our problems.

When we analyse human psychology, we realise that, when a man is in deep trouble and is helpless he looks out for help from others.  A feeling that someone is there to protect us and support us, give us emotional and psychological strength to move forward in life without any fear and hesitation. When we move forward with courage, we tend to think logically and we try to solve all our problems on our own.

Now I view and assess circumstances from a matured perspective. My problems never trouble me like in the past nor I am afraid of life challenges. I have started accepting the realities of life and have stopped blaming fellow human beings for my problems.  I have realised that my miseries are the result of my past karmas and deeds. Struggles are meant to make us strong and mature.

My daily prayer

I always say

“Oh! God, don’t give me too much pleasure so that I forget you.  At the same time don’t give me so much pain that I am left with no energy to pray you. The only favour I ask you is don’t bring me back to this world again.”

I pray whole heartedly without expecting anything in return. I am sure God is not a business man who expects something in return from us, to give us what we ask for. I am happy and satisfied with what life has given me. I have stopped chasing success and has started accepting failures. I have learnt lessons from my failures and have taken a pledge that I will not repeat the same mistakes again in my life. I try to see God in every human being.

Conclusion

God is our mental strength while our family is our physical support system.  We need the support of both God and family for our survival.

The truth is, no one is responsible for our problems.  Our past deeds irrespective of whether good or back come back to us as pain and pleasure. So always do good deeds for being happy.

God does not expect us to sit and pray before him the whole day.  He will be pleased if we just remember him once in a day and do the duties assigned to us with sincerity and dedication.

We should never try to analyse or describe God.  It is a pure feeling of devotion, to be experienced and enjoyed.
