In this article I discuss about fear whether it is a cause or a consequence and discuss how to overcome it in our day to day life with some examples.
FEAR – Is it a cause or consequence?
We are aware that the vital organs of human body like heart, brain, lungs and kidneys does not stop functioning even while we are asleep. Human brain is one such organ which keeps thinking and analysing till a person is alive. Brain is a friend as well as enemy of a human being. The thoughts that arise in human brain is not always positive. Negative thoughts developed in human brain sometimes make man’s life miserable. One such negative thought is Fear. Hence it is consequence of negative thoughts. Hence we should be always positive in our thoughts and actions.

Living in an Island may be an exquisite and beautiful experience but living a life where the mind is constantly occupied with fearful thoughts is horrible and miserable.
It is perhaps not an exaggeration to say that in present day people are living in an island surrounded with challenges and the fear of them is inseparable from our life.
Types
From our childhood till death, we experience various types of like fear of
- darkness
- Examination
- approaching teachers with doubts
- Not securing admission in desired college
- Not getting job after completing our education
- Not getting promotion after securing a job
- Not getting married or not getting a compatible life partner
- Financial inadequacy to meet family requirements
- Accidents while travelling
- Losing valuable things in our possession
- Animals
- Losing loved ones
- Old age problems
- Death.
The list of fearful thoughts that occur in human mind is enormous and endless.
These thoughts that arise in our mind may or may not turn into reality. But we always imagine the problems in our thoughts, exaggerate it and invite fear into our minds.
I read in some book that “Fear of death is more painful than actual death”. Similarly imagining problems in our thoughts is more dreadful than actually facing and solving the problem.
Excessive feeling of dreadful thoughts can result in anxiety and depression, which in turn can have adverse effect on our health.
How to Overcome fear ?
We can avoid overthinking by engaging ourselves in constructive work like cleaning the house, reading books, watching Television, listening to Music, going out for a walk, visiting temples, meditation and self-counselling.
We should repeatedly tell ourselves that the problems we imagine in our mind do not exist in reality and we should also train our mind to accept changes. With out change, there is no growth and development. When we cannot change a situation, it is better to accept it.
To put it in simple terms, when negative thoughts occur in our mind, we should not encourage it, rather we should take up some job and divert our mind towards the job and avoid the negative thoughts. Encouraging negative thoughts is like watering a flowering plant to encourage its growth.
By sending a strong message to our brain that “I can handle any situation. I will not succumb to the situation; I will overcome it”, we can overcome it.
Support from family members play a crucial part in overcoming fear. A manifestation from family members that “I will support you in tough time” will give enormous strength to mind to overcome fear.
Nostalgic Moments
In olden days, to take an example of stone age, people would stay in groups. The reason was to fight and defeat an enemy collectively. Similarly in present condition non-cooperation among family members is a major cause of concern. Family conditions can also be a major cause of fear. Eliminating the root cause of the problem is better than inviting and solving the problem. With team work we can achieve even the most complicated targets. There can be no better team than a family and exemplary team members than family members. With strong support from family members, one can conquer fear.
We are well aware that every rule has an exception. Similarly, not all fears are harmful. Let us take an example of a God-fearing person. A God-fearing person trains his mind to think positively. He will be ever ready to help others and expect nothing in return. He believes that God will protect him and remove all the obstacles from life. His belief in God acts as a security to the brain. Ultimately, the human brain needs some feeling of security to keep fear away.
Examples and Conclusion
Like, a man with sufficient balance in his bank account is well prepared to bear unforeseen expenses. A God-fearing man is well prepared to face challenges in life. A feeling that “God will protect me” give him enormous strength to face any challenging situation. In reality God never come and solve our problem. We are the ones who face the problem and find a solution to solve it. But the feeling of the presence of God and a positive thought that “I am not alone in the struggle; God is with me” gives us courage and strength to face the challenging situations.
A child whose mother is around him, fear for nothing. Similarly, a man who feels God is around him fear for nothing.
Now, let us take an example of a person who fears law of the land. Such person will never violate the law and will contribute to the development of his country as well as his family.
We can conclude by saying that Fear is both creative and destructive. It is like a medicine. If it is within the limit, it gives positive result and lead to the development of the individual and if exceeds the limit, lead to anxiety and phobia.
Ultimately, we can say that Fear is an imaginary feeling of a person. One who learn the art of controlling it and overcoming it can lead a happy, successful and peaceful life.
I have written book called “Reticent Roshan ” to illustrate how to bring up children as single mother by leaving the fear of it at back. The book is available in Amazon. The link for the book is ,
